One morning I was having my second cup of coffee when a pod of Manatees showed up. I had heard that they like fresh water, so I had Mari hold the hose while I took some photographs. This Manatee was no more than ten feet from us.

A little while ago I offered through a local Sarasota newsletter to make free portraits. I had a number of replies (some of which can be seen in the previous post). Sari is a Balinese dancer and she came back for a second secession. I created a slideshow of her dance and posted it on YouTube.
Sari says: “This classical Balinese dance is based on a romance that appears Read More→
I met Maggie, Lorna & Tony through Debbie (my sister-in-law) who had been dog sitting for Karen & Tim Stark. The dogs were very cooperative as long as treats were involved. The video is a homage to William Wegman who had videoed first his dog Man Ray and than later included Fay Ray.
What he did with getting them to move their heads had always tickled me and here in this video Maggie and Lorna revised the rolls of Man Ray and Fay Ray.
Many thanks to Debbie for assisting in this session.
As all previous photos in my posts, these photos were made with the Canon G10. The video was also made with the Canon G10 and was edited in Final Cut Express.
I met Woody first in New York a number of years ago. He is a friend of my sister-in-law Debbie (Mari and I have been living with Debbie for the past 8 months) and I have seen him a number of times here. Woody lives in Nokomis which is in Sarasota County. He took an amusing photo of Debbie, Mari and I recently, so you can see we have a good time together.
If you are interested in see his paintings and read what he has to say you can go to RO Woody Studios.
This is a from a series of Black & White Portraits I have been posting. In most cases I will be posting a short video interview so you can get some idea of what the person sounds like and looks like when they are talking. In addition there will also be a series of B & W portraits from one or more sittings. I work with natural light, so the portraits are all taken outside.

I met Maji many years ago up north in Boston. Maji was one of the first participants in Dance Freedom which was a dance organization begun in 1968 in Cambridge. Dance Freedom is a smoke free, alcohol free, barefoot dance environment where any kind of dance is acceptable (as long as it is non harmful).
Maji now lives in Venice (part of Sarasota County). I reconnected with Maji at the Drum Circle. For anyone who has been to the drum circle at Siesta Key or Nokomis, Maji is a regular participant, wearing his jesters hat. He also spends time on an organic farm in Costa Rica with his wife. Earth Rose Organic Farm.

Here is another video slide show of photographs I made from a few trips to the Siesta Drum Circle at Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota (also included are a couple of photographs from Nokomis Drum Circle in Nokomis). Mari and I met sixteen years ago at a weekly event called Dance Freedom in Cambridge, MA and the drum circles down here have a similar flavor to them where anything goes dance wise. Although in the case of the drum circles here there are more watchers than participants. This drum circle according to their web page (www.siestadrumcircle.com) began twelve years ago. Read More→
I never thought I would be photographing birds. In my thirty plus years of photography, I never had photographed birds before. Just now I went outside for a break and there was an Egret fishing in the canal behind the house not more than ten yards away. So the birds are hard to avoid here in Sarasota. I have put together another video slideshow of birds I have met. Click to View Video SlideShow
Well….it has been some time since I have made an entry in this blog. A few weeks ago I got a great deal on a used Mac G5 computer which has opened up many more possibilities for editing and presenting my photographs. I had an old G4 computer that was 10 years old and whenever I tried to work with video, the computer would groan and than go into major slow down mode. So I have been spending the last few weeks learning programs that enabled me to create what I am showing you here. Click to View Video SlideShow
I go out to Debbie’s backyard to have a smoke and late in the day play my xaphoon. Here is a list of all the animals I have seen in Debbie’s backyard since being here for three months: squirrels, rabbits, soft shell turtles, always lizards, bats, vultures flying overhead, osprey, all kinds of herons, egrets, red-shouldered hawk, sandhill cranes, and yesterday (July 9) a Bobcat sitting in a tree. No alligators yet, but I am still looking. Read More→
Let’s say, I meet someone on the beach and take their photo. If they would like me to email them the photo I realized that telling them to email me at sam@samlaundon.com was very forgettable.
Before Mari and I moved down here I registered sarasotasam.com, because every time I mentioned Sarasota Sam to a friend or acquaintance they would smile or laugh, so I knew I had something memorable. Read More→
