Tutoring
The most common comment I have received from my private students is, “I’ve learned more from one session with you, Sam, than I had from an entire photography course!”
What are the benefits of taking private lessons rather than a photography class?
I adapt to your skill level. Through years of teaching I have learned that I need to gear my presentation to the student in the class who knows the least, or they will be lost throughout the course. The students who are more advanced have to wait patiently while others are brought up to speed. When I work one-on-one, I can begin the lesson in sync with your level of skill and knowledge, which is more productive and more fun for both of us!
I focus on your purpose. People want to make better photographs for a variety of reasons, and of many different types of subjects. You may want to photograph objects for promotion and display, document your adventures to share with friends, create stunning portraits, or capture the beauty of nature. Whatever subject you are most interested in, I will have different advice to share, and I can focus your lessons on your individual desires.
I offer convenient scheduling. When you sign up for a class, you need to adhere to the class timeframe, like it or not. I have the flexibility to meet with you at times that work best for your lifestyle and schedule. Whether you’re in the area year-round, in season, or just on a short vacation, I can set up a tutoring session that fits your needs.
What do you need to know to study with me?
I will work with anyone with a desire to learn, whether you’re a beginner or expert. What is most important is that you have a passion to improve. Like any craft, being willing to understand technique is the prerequisite to developing ones vision. The less one has to think about what they are doing with the camera, the more one will see – and that’s when the fun really begins!
